New feature - Story Checkpoints


First things first - Frosh Life has left "On hold" status and is back in development since about a month ago. I realize I haven't properly shared that piece of information here on Itch. My focus has been on development of the game and the pieces of information that I've released have been on Patreon (which is my primary outlet for info regarding Frosh Life). Currently, I'm dedicating about 50% of my time to Frosh Life.

Anyway, I thought I'd share some progress with you. The first feature - and the biggest feature in the next release, I guess - are story checkpoints. I never really designed the story engine of the game with rewinding or saving in mind. It was only ever really meant to go one way - forward. I did think about implementing saving during the end of development for the first release but it just ended up giving me a headache. I just couldn't find a satisfying way to implement without rewriting the whole thing.

I know the lack of this functionality has bothered some people, which is why I'm very happy to have found a way to implement it. And - as a side note - I rather think the solution turned out quite elegant in the end (oh, I'm just sooo pleased with myself, aren't I?).

So, it works this way: the game automatically creates a checkpoint at the start of each story scene and at each choice you make. If you're unhappy with a choice you've made, simply rewind to the last checkpoint and make a new choice. If you for some reason want to rewind to the beginning of the scene, just keep rewinding until you get there. And if you want to save, you can save at any time during the story, but what you'll actually save is the status at the last checkpoint, so that is where you'll start when you load up a game saved in a story scene.

I know, this isn't as fully-fledged as e.g. Ren'Py, but in order to achieve that I really would have to rewrite the whole story engine. I think this covers the most common user scenario, at least I think that I've ever only saved at a choice in Ren'Py anyway.
